Pearls & Perils

Happy Monday, I hope that you are all well and ready for the week ahead. If you haven't yet read last week's Organisation tip, take some time to read it as it links with today's tip. One of the greatest enemies of productivity is procrastination. Procrastination is when we delay or postpone action in doing something. We are all guilty of procrastinating whether it's something as trivial as washing the dishes, ironing, folding up laundry or important tasks such as paying a bill, making an important decision, studying for an exam, completing an important task.

We procrastinate for various reasons out of fear, laziness, insecurity, complacency and the list goes on.

Have you noticed how we often procrastinate things which challenge us, that require us to do something that is outside of our comfort zone? What have you been procrastinating? Perhaps you had a goal to learn something new, to pursue a new career opportunity, start saving, launch a new business, start investing in your health but you have been procrastinating in taking actions to achieve your goals.

The only way to combat procrastination is to simply START. Start learning the skills you desire to have, start applying for the jobs you want, start saving even if it is a small amount, start developing your business idea, start changing your eating habits, start that exercise regime you've bookmarked in your phone for weeks, launch that business idea you have been working on and delaying to launch out of fear of failure or judgement. Don't delay for tomorrow, what you can do today.

Being organised is not something we become overnight, it is an intentional process of developing habits that increase your productivity. I hope today's tip has helped you, if it has share it with someone else. If there are any topics you would like me to cover leave a comment or email me at info@pearlsandperils.com

The past five months has been a whirlwind of events. Who would have predicted that the past 6 months would have unfolded in the way that it has? Although most of the world has slowed down due to the spread of the Coronavirus, one thing that has not slowed down is time. Perhaps you set goals at the beginning of this year, that you intended on achieving by now or being significantly close to achieving, which now feels far and in between. All hope is not lost, it is still possible to achieve your goals! Of course, there are certain things that we cannot do at present but I'm sure that there are still things that you can do to work towards your goals. Instead of complaining about the things that we cannot do, let's focus on working on the things that we can actively do to achieve our goals.

Today's organisation tip is all about distractions, these are the things that divert our attention from our goals and cause us to mismanage our time. Distractions will always arise, the key is for us to not allow those distractions to dominate our time; rather we have to dominate our distractions. What are the things that tend to distract you? It could be browsing on your phone, listening to music, watching tv, day-dreaming, talking to people, it could even be snacking. Distractions come in various forms and can differ from person to person it's imperative for you to know what your distractions are so that you can avoid repeating those habits and effectively manage your time.

Take some time today to think about what your distractions are, once you discover what they are think of practical things that you can do to minimise those distractions. If you find that your phone is a distraction, when working try to leave your phone in a separate room to avoid the temptation of checking your phone. If you have to use your phone for work perhaps try putting your phone on Do not disturb mode or Aeroplane mode as this still allows you to connect to Wifi if you need to use the Internet for work.

Don't forget that being organised is not something we become overnight, it is an intentional process of developing habits that increase your productivity. I hope today's tip has helped you, if it has share it with someone else. If there are any topics you would like me to cover leave a comment or email me at info@pearlsandperils.com

Being organised is something most people aspire to be, but unfortunately the majority of us fail to become. I have struggled with being organised at numerous points in my life, moments where I have taken on a lot of projects at once, I've made a long list of goals and tasks to do but was unable to achieve them due to a lack of organisation and balance. Being organised is not something we become overnight, it is an intentional process of developing habits that increase your productivity. I'll be sharing some tips with you every Monday of things that I have done which has helped me to become more organised, as well as tips that studies have shown are effective.

For a long time I thought that I was great at multi-tasking, but when I analysed my productivity from my 'multi-tasking sessions' I would find that although I worked on multiple tasks, I failed to complete anything! Multi-tasking is not as productive as we often think it is, studies have shown that multi-tasking reduces your productivity by 40%. Although you may be able to do more than one task simultaneously that does not mean that you are doing them both to the best of your ability.

The tip for today is to try to focus on one task at a time, set yourself a realistic goal that you would like to accomplish before moving on to another task. The goal does not have to necessarily be completing that task, but it could be to start a specific thing, finish a stage that is required to complete that task etc. In this way you will be able to concentrate on what you are doing without switching between tasks and potentially making unnecessary mistakes. It's that classic case of speaking to someone on the phone and writing an email at the same time, instead of writing what you mean to say you end up writing what you are speaking about, which can be problematic lol.

Working on one task at a time may not always be possible in a work-setting as some jobs require you to multi-task throughout the day, but where possible try to focus your attention on one task at a time even if you are only able to do so for a short period of time. This will help you to be more productive, less stressed and reduce errors.

What are your thoughts on today's tip? Were you surprised that multi-tasking reduces our productivity? Feel free to share this post if you found it helpful and leave your comments. If there are any topics you would like me to cover leave a comment or email me at info@pearlsandperils.com
